TAXES ARE DUE TODAY!
It is that time of the year when property taxes are due and today is the last day to pay your real estate taxes!
As you know tax bills go out sometime in October but you don’t have to pay them until January 31st of the following year. After January 31st your tax collector begins to access a late fee, usually a percentage of the tax bill. For every month after that the percentage is charged which means your tax bill continues to go up, so be sure to pay them on time.
For most homeowners they rely on the mortgage company to pay the real estate taxes usually collected in your escrow account. Out of every payment made a portion goes to the escrow account which collects to pay for the taxes. What most homeowners don’t know is the mortgage company isn’t responsible for paying those taxes, you the homeowner are the one responsible. The reality is the mortgage company does a pretty good job of paying the taxes however I always advise homeowners to double check to make sure their taxes have been paid. Remember even if your mortgage company forgets the fee is still access and it is your responsibility.
With a heart of a teacher I look to educate my clients about the process of buying, selling or renting real estate. I strongly feel an informed and educated consumer will make better decisions and be less likely to be taken advantage of.
